These 112 red Shumensko crates were once filled with a special Bulgarian beer that sold like hotcakes. Seeing as they most definitely would not go home to Shumen due to the expensive and inconvenient effort required, being “recycled”. i.e., being shredded and downcycled, was on the cards for them. We took them and, inspired by the volume they can take on, decided to build a structure that maintained the social nature of their previous lives. The resulting Shumensko pavilion creates a cycle for lost crates. It includes cultivating produce, preparing a refreshing vinegar-based lemonade called a shrub, and sharing it at a culminating summer celebration. Plants grow in crates, the compost composts in crates. People sit on crates—not to mention the structure itself is made from crates.
